The future of social networks

As part of the Chartered Institute of Public Relations’ summer series, I was invited to put together an hour’s presentation on “The future of social networks – beyond Facebook and Twitter”.

Luckily for me, between accepting the invitation and delivering the presentation, Google launched Google+, which is already shaking up the whole space.

The deck below is long. But the theme that runs through it can be summed up in a few bullet points:

- The existing social networks we’re already familiar with will remain

- New networks (predominantly built for mobile first) will grow up around niche interest groups, just as the original big players originally did, using public APIs and things like Facebook’s Open Graph and Twitter’s Oath as the backbone through which they can aggregate and use social information

- Niche networks, which do one thing well will be created and thrive

- Google+ will help to redefine our concept of privacy – in an opt-in way, not Facebook’s opt-out way. Google+ is built bottom up so, using circles wisely, users can choose who sees what things they share (no more Mums/bosses accidentally seeing pics of their kids/employees drunk at the weekends)

- We’re going to see significantly more interaction between the ‘real’ and social worlds as RFID technology takes off

There’s much more in the deck than that, and we’ll publish much more on Google+ in due course (it’s not expected to open up to brands for another 6-8 weeks), but here’s the first taste of a few predictions for the future...

Chris Reed :-
Hi Marc - unfortunately Prezi uses Flash I think, so can't be viewed on iPads or iPhones at the moment. Is that what you're using? It should work across all other browsers online - you can get to the original version here if you like http://rstl.es/qeiVxm...

Unfortunately I wasn't able to view the presentation. And prezzi.com/support didn't help. Can you please fix it. I am very much interested to read it. Thank you in advance. Marc
